Conditions Grow Worse

The situation inside the Alamo was grim. The walls had originally been built as protection against hostile Native Americans. The steady assault of the Mexican cannon balls was much different than that of arrows. Ominous cracks showed up in the stone and adobe walls as Santa Anna’s artillery, literally, chipped away at them.

Ammunition was running low. Travis, Crockett, Dickinson, and the others had fired as often as they could reload early in the siege. Now, with gunpowder running low, they knew that they had to make every shot count. Food ran low too—if all the Mexicans did was wait them out, their days were still numbered. With each passing day, Santa Anna moved his artillery closer, making it more and more effective.

On the morning of March 3, another large group of Santa Anna’s soldiers arrived. Santa Anna was exasperated at their delay. He had sent them orders to make haste, but their general had called a five-day halt so that they could rest. There were now twenty-five hundred Mexican soldiers surrounding the Alamo.

By now it was very clear to Santa Anna and his generals that conditions inside the Alamo were desperate. Oddly, none of the generals suggested waiting for the defenders to run out of food—a simple strategy that could have easily succeeded with little or no bloodshed. Some of his senior officers did suggest showing mercy to the Texans, since they were so clearly no longer a real threat.

Santa Anna heard them out, but said, “Against the daring foreigners opposing us, the honor of our Nation and our Army is at stake.”5 The army, he ordered, would rest and prepare on March 4 and 5, and be ready to storm the walls on the morning of March 6, 1836. The Mexican leader left nothing to chance. He carefully prepared his plan of attack.
